Some electric items can tap into sensitive info: Official

SOME radios in mobile phones and cars or other electronic items imported into the country can be used to tap into sensitive information used by State and commercial organisations in the country.
National Information and Communications Technology Authority (Nicta) enforcement and compliance manager Gabriel Nakau said Papua new Guinea’s FM band frequency ranges from 88-100 megahertz (MHz) while others for example in Japan operate at 76MHz.
He said PNG police operated their radios below 88MHz, which was Japan’s radio frequency range and that was why appliances imported from countries like Japan could easily access police information through the radios on mobile phones, cars, and radios.
“We’ve received reports from police about this,” Nakau said.
“This is the reason some people can access police information through these means.”
He said if it was not for a memorandum of understanding between them and PNG Customs, they would not have detected such devices.
