Delay in remand cases seen as cause of prison escapes

THE long delay in taking to court the cases of remand prisoners was blamed for the escape of 11 prisoners from Kerevat jail on Sunday.
Acting jail commander Superintendent Margret Garap told The National that the roof was cut for the escape between 3am and 4am.
She said the jail administration was not clear how the cutters were smuggled into the prison.
Garap said that of the 11, seven men were remanded by the national court, three by the district court and one had been convicted.
She said police had stepped into a joint operation with wardens to track down the escapees.
Garap said the jail was holding 113 on remand since last year.
