THE Education Department has approved the establishment of a new Training Vocational Education Training (TVET) wing.
Acting education secretary Dr Joseph Pagelio said a first assistant secretary, two assistant secretaries and a director of
community colleges would
head the wing.
Appointment of staff has taken place and officers have assumed their duties.
“This restructure will address the desperate shortage of skilled workers that the country needs,” Pagelio said.
He said the demand for skilled labour had grown as a result of the recent boom in the mining and petroleum sector.
Pagelio said the answer to how the government could alleviate skill shortages faced by Papua New Guinea was by providing free education to all school-aged children.
