THE Education Department has been awarded the 2018 most improved public sector organisation by the Papua New Guinea Human Resource Institute (PNGHRI) recently in Port Moresby.
According to PNGHRI president Jerry Wemin, the Department of Education surpassed all organisations when it came to management, accountability, good governance and reporting under the Public Finance Management Act.
Education secretary Dr Uke Kombra received the award on behalf of the department in a ceremony at in Port Moresby last month.
Kombra said it was an honour and privilege to receive the award and dedicated it to the hard working staff and management of the department.
He said this had come about as a result of the commitment and hard work of an organisation that operated with a staff of more than 800 that manages over 60,000 teachers, 13,000 schools and 2.2 million children.
“I dedicate this award to every staff starting from the janitor up to the top management of the department,” Kombra said.
“The government has challenged us to provide quality education for everyone in the country and take back PNG and this cannot be achieved unless you have an organisation that is effective, accountable and transparent.”
