Dept heads extend contract

FIVE senior heads of government departments and agencies have extended their contracts in a signing in Government House last Friday.
They are Works and Highways Department secretary David Wereh, Commerce secretary David Ganaii, National Statistician John Aseavu Igitoi, Central administrator Francis Koaba and National Gaming Control Board chief executive officer Imelda Agon.
The signing was a low-key event without calling for media coverage.
Wereh told The National that he signed a five-year contract which would bring him total 14 years of service.
Wereh was first appointed secretary in 2013.
“During this term in office, it was a difficult time with a huge backlog of maintenance and rehabilitation challenges affecting all our roads,” he said.
“I think in the past 10 years we have been trying our best to reduce the backlog and improve deteriorated conditions of highways and bridges.”
Wereh holds a Masters of Civil Engineering and is a registered member of the Institute of Engineers PNG and Australian Chartered Procurement Institution.
