Female students of University of PNG’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences had more reason to celebrate International Women’s Day on Friday.
They were given keys to their newly-renovated dormitory by the contractor.
The three-storey building was funded by State through Department of Higher Education Research Science and Technology (DHERST) at a cost of K491,735.
The dormitory will house 60 students who were temporarily residing at the main Waigani campus.
Present to receive the keys from contractor Parohu EPC Engineering Construction were National Planning and Monitoring, Finance, DHERST, and the medical faculty management team led by dean Prof Nakapi Tefuarani.
All parties expressed satisfaction at the quality of work done.
Tefuarani said female students would be immediately brought in to occupy the dormitory so that they focused on their studies in a conducive environment.
“With the dorm keys now in our possession, we will immediately bring in our female students to occupy the building and get along well in their studies in the year,” he said.
“The work is of very satisfactory standard.
“It is a real bonus for the female students, having it officially opened for occupancy on International Women’s Day.”
Department of National Planning and Monitoring assistant secretary in charge of higher education, Wesley Welli, commended Parohu EPC Engineers.
“I am personally very satisfied with the quality of work done by the contractor for our kids here at medical school,” he said.
“I have a child studying here.
“I know that with such improvements to their study environments, they would excel in their learning.”
Parohu Engineering has three maintenance projects at the school, including this dormitory.
