Depts working together to address road issues

THE departments of Transport and Works are working together to lift the standard of roads and address their maintenance, says Minister Westley Nukundj.
He told Parliament transport was a conduit for service delivery to allow social and economic development and growth.
He said the 9000 kilometers of roads had increased by only 200 km in the past 30 years.
Nukundj said the focus should now be on the Department of Works to develop 11 missing links plus the management and maintenance of roads under rearrangement with the National Road Authority.
He said the proposed road policy would look at support to provinces and districts to regulate their road standards and maintenance.
“It is important to recognise the role of different levels of government in the transport system.”
Nukundj said the Government was charged with connecting the regions, provinces and districts and providing a consistent national regulatory framework so that people adhered to the same rules.
