MOROBE Deputy Governor Willie Simbisi has committed K20,000 to Markham’s G-Gingump Football Association for next season.
He made the commitment on Monday during the launching of the association at Itsirl village in the Umi Atzera local-level government area.
Simbisi acknowledged the association for creating a pathway for footballers in the area.
He said he had committed K5,000 last year which was used to incorporate the association.
“When I heard this, it gave me confidence to support the association and I challenge G-Gingump to prove to me that they can take field a team in the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League one day,” Simbisi told those who attended the launching.
“I’m here to see sports in Markham excel so I’m committing K20,000 to boost G-Gingump next year.
“Soccer is our identity.
“Lutheran churches, soccer and coffee are synonymous with the province.
“They make up the identity of Morobe.
“When you travel to the districts, the spirit of soccer is there — whether it be up in the mountains, down in the valley or along the coast.
“This is the pride of Morobe and as the government of the day, I’ve made time to come and launch this association and the week-long tournament.
“Soccer has now been commercialised with players making money every day.
“If you can’t make it through the education system to get into any profession, remain positive.
“Maybe there’s a future for you in soccer.
“Such association will help you develop your skills and reach another level.”
Simbisi said as leaders of the day, they had to stand together to encourage young people to succeed in life.
“I know you all have great potential,” he said.
