THREE members of the Papua New Guinea national track and field team attended the Team PNG Hero programme in Port Moresby last week.
Poro Gahekave, Sharon Toako and Jacklyne Travertz were nominated by Athletics PNG (APNG) to undertake the training at the invitation of the PNG Olympic Committee.
They joined more than 28 participants from other sports.
The programme is the committee’s athlete ambassador initiative.
The term “Hero” reflects PNGOC’s core values of honesty, excellence, respect and openness.
APNG strongly supports this initiative which recognises its elite athletes as role models, having the potential to influence positive change in society and represent the positive values associated with sports.
Sports must also recognise the importance of empowering athletes with the necessary skills and knowledge to allow them to become a Hero.
The programme provides an opportunity to develop athletes into leaders in their sport and communities.
“The three girls from athletics were amazed at the programme which they found to be incredibly inspiring and a real eye opener for them,” APNG president Tony Green said.
