Boikin Primary tops schools at East Sepik rugby fest

THE PNG Rugby Union’s (PNGRU) Get Into Rugby (GIR) festival in Wewak saw six primary schools competing in four divisions.
The festival was coordinated by the teachers with assistance from the East Sepik Rugby Union.
The event saw games played over three days ending with Boikin Primary School being declared overall champions.
PNGRU education and training coordinator Sailosi Druma said they were pleased with the work of the GIR committee and East Sepik Rugby Union on the turnout of the festival.
In the Under-16 division Mongniol and Boikin primary schools came first in the male and female divisions while from Kaindi Primary School finished as runners-up in both divisions.
For the U14 male division, St Mary’s Primary finished on top with Boikin coming in second place while in the girls division, Boikin came first with Perigo primary the runners-up.
Moem Barracks Primary School topped the U12 division in boys and girls while St Mary’s (boys) and Kaindi (girls) finished in second place.
In the open divisions, Boikin dominated the boys open division with Mongniol in second place and in the girls open division, Perigo came in first place with St Mary’s in second place. This saw Boikin primary, a school just outside of Wewak, sitting on the first placing of the rugby festival followed by St Mary’s, Kaindi, Moem, Perigo and Mongniol primary schools.
Boikin scooped the overall champion tittle and were presented the trophy sponsored by the East Sepik education sports office and the office of East Sepik Governor Allan Bird. With the success of the event, the excitement and interest for rugby in the province, PNGRU education and training coordinator Sailosi Druma said the programme would be rolled out to other parts of East Sepik next year.
“2021 will see the programme rolled out into the other districts of East Sepik — Maprik, Wosera Gawi, Angoram, Ambuti Drekikir and Yangoru Saussia.”
