PROFESSIONAL kickboxer Bostany Elo has taken the initiative to address crime and violence in communities with the introduction of an advocacy group in Port Moresby.
Elo’s said the group started in April this year and targeted people at the grassroots level in a bid to address the social issues affecting their lives.
“The group tries to establish with communities what violence means to them and what impact it has on their lives,” he said.
“The thing that we try to focus on is the type of examples we set for our kids. If they see violence or abusive behaviour happening in front of them, they will be accustomed to it and think that this is the way to solve everything.
“We try to use sports in general to help our children build good character. It doesn’t necessarily have to be kickboxing but we encourage them to take up any sport as long as they can be part of a team or a group.
“We want to be able to reach out to the grassroots and get their views on a lot of pressing issues that are affecting them.”
