DIGICEL Cup stakeholders, including fans and sponsors, have been commended for their support throughout the season despite the challenges brought about by Covid-19 pandemic.
At the competition’s awards night in Port Moresby last week, Digicel PNG senior vice-president Lorna McPherson said the Digicel Cup had faced the toughest challenge in its 10-year history.
But she said the Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC) and PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) had worked tirelessly to ensure a successful season.
“Rugby league in PNG has faced a huge challenge this year but credit to PNGNRLC and PNGRFL for successfully managing and running the competition,” McPherson said.
“Thank you to every club that participated this season.
“We also recognise the support of their respective sponsors who have sacrificed a lot despite the challenges.
“Thank you to the fans and every stakeholders of the game for your continued support.”
She said rugby league played an important role in helping address social issues in the country.
“Next year will mark the 11th anniversary of Digicel’s naming-rights sponsorship of the competition and we will continue our support.”
PNGNRLC chairman Adrian Chow thanked Digicel for its continued support.
PNGNRLC manager Stanley Hondina and PNGRFL chairman Sandis Tsaka also shared similar sentiments.
Hondina said while most rugby league competitions around the world had been cancelled, PNG rugby league took on the challenge by staging the Digicel Cup amid the pandemic.
“We saw the Covid-19 situation as the perfect opportunity for PNG rugby league to stamp its mark and that’s what we did,” he said.
“Congratulations to everyone who had contributed to the successes of this season.”
