DIGICEL PNG yesterday announced a platinum sponsorship of K7 million for the national men’s and women’s rugby league teams over the next three years.
Digicel PNG senior vice-president Lorna McPherson said during the announcement in Port Moresby yesterday that the sponsorship would cover the teams’ World Cup campaign in England at the end of year as well as other international fixtures till the end of 2024.
She said the sponsorship showed the telecommunication company’s continued commitment to supporting PNG rugby league.
“As part of our platinum sponsorship, the Kumuls (men) and Orchids (women) will each receive K1 million this year, K1.1 million in 2023 and K1.2 million in 2024,” MacPherson said at the Santos National Football Stadium.
“Also, as part of our sponsorship, the two teams will receive over K150,000 worth of phones, Wi-Fi devices and data services.
“Digicel PNG is fully committed to the development of rugby league in PNG. If you look at the facts that we have been investing in the local semi-professional competition, the Digicel Cup, we have invested in the SP Hunters, and now we are investing in the national teams, the Kumuls and Orchids.
“This really shows the development plan we have in supporting the game that we are all passionate about.”
Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League chairman Sandis Tsaka thanked Digicel for its continued support towards rugby league.
“This is a significant investment by Digicel,” he said.
“Digicel has invested a lot in the last 15 years across all tiers of rugby league in PNG.
“They have invested in the grassroots, national competition, international side (Hunters) and now the national teams (Kumuls and Orchids).”
