A DIGITAL system capable of updating details of every person registered in Papua New Guinea has been initiated by the Church of Latter Day Saints.

Presenting a hard drive copy of the digitalised system to the Civil Registry yesterday, Jeffrey Cummings, from LDS, said the system could update details of every family.

“This system is vital because as we are progressing … we need to update details of every family one belongs to and our genealogies,” Cummings said.

According to Sivore Lakau, from the Civil Registry Archives, it would be easier for recording as all manual details in the archives would continue to be updated digitally to make it convenient.

“Most of the records we have in the archives can decay and they cannot be very safe,” he said.

The director general of the registry, Dickson Kiragi said good record-keeping was important as not only PNG people needed it but expatriates who had become residents and citizens.
