NATIONAL unity cannot be taken for granted after years of being an independent nation, Deputy Prime Minister Leo Dion says.

“One of the ways I believe will further instil our national identity is to make sure that people are meaningfully involved in the affairs of the country under the different levels of government as per the decentralisation framework,” Dion said.

He was speaking at the closing of the Governors Council conference in Kavieng. He signed a joint communiqué initially endorsed by four governors representing each region – Gary Juffa (Southern), Jim Kas (Momase), Peter Ipatas (Highlands) and Ereman ToBainig Jr (NGI).

The two-day conference was focused mainly on the role of the different levels of government in nation building.

He said discussions over the two days were fruitful and he would table what they had agreed upon in Cabinet.

He thanked host Governor Sir Julius Chan and the people of New Ireland for their hospitality.
