The Papua New Guinea (PNG) Assembly of Disabled Persons recently funded a strategic consultation workshop for the PNG Blind Union.
The purpose of the workshop was to draw a strategic plan to collaborate with stakeholders and development partners to remove barriers affecting the blind.
The workshop also aimed to make the environment more conducive for visually impaired and blind persons.
PNG Disabled Persons Assembly programme manager Ross Tito said: “The workshop is a strategic plan workshop for the blind people and will be a national road map for blind people in PNG.
“The PNG Blind Union is trying to make it a national issue by asking the Government to address it at all levels and to support the blind people in making services more inclusive to the blind such as education.”
According to Tito, the PNG Assembly of Disabled Persons brings together people living with all forms of disability to discuss issues affecting them and others like them throughout the country.
He said the expected outcome of the workshop was to create a strategic plan which would link PNG Blind Union to the World Blind Union.
“PNG Blind Union would be linked to the World Blind Union which will see people coming from all over the world to discuss what’s affecting the blind community globally in terms of access to health and education and to be seen as valued members of societies rather than just liabilities,” he said.
