Disaster centre wants public to heed local forecast

THE National Disaster Centre wants the general public to take heed of the warnings issued by the Weather Office.
The warnings include gale-force winds, heavy rain, rough seas and flooding which were experienced in the Southern region and most parts of the country over the last two days.
The National Weather Service is warning everyone in the country to take extra precautions.
Communities living along the coastlines and islands are advised to secure their homes, take extra pre-cautions when moving about their normal chores and activities and to refrain from fishing and travelling out to sea.
People living on river banks and near rivers should consider moving to higher ground in case flooding may happen suddenly.
Those living inland are asked to stay clear of trees, power poles, bill boards, old buildings and unsecured structures.
Care should also be taken when driving and travelling on roads to avoid being trapped or swept away by flood waters and landslides.
Meanwhile, Port Moresby in the National Capital District had been hit hard by heavy rain combined with string hail winds.
The rain with wind has destroyed houses, power lines, felled trees while causing flood in most settlements.
