THE Fly River continues to rise during high tides but North Fly in Western has not experienced wind or rain like Gulf, its police commander Superintendent Tep Puri says.
The two provinces share borders but Gulf has been swept by strong winds, rain and rough seas like most of the southern region.
“After the long dry spell, the Fly River is back and normal business has resumed through sea transport,” Puri said the river level rising and returning to normal after some rain.
He said locals along the river who had depended on it for fish and travel to the garden were using the river again.
“Supply came in from donors and government agencies while no damage of houses and gardens have been reported yet,” Puri said.
He said Christmas and New Year were peaceful.
“There have been firecrackers doing the rounds in the villages but everything was under control,” he said.
“I commend the ownership taken by the community leaders during the festive season to help the police keep the celebrations safe.”
