Disciplinary fees too much

Letters

SOME Aiyura National High School students were refused collection of their Grade 12 certificates last week.
The school management claimed that there were penalties imposed on them for alleged disciplinary matters caused after graduation.
The students approached the school to collect their certificate with the disciplinary fees issued to them prior to closure the school, but were turned away by the school administration.
There was another set of disciplinary fees which the students were never made aware of: From K1000 to K7000 per student.
Parents of the affected students are now asking serious questions:

  • Are Aiyura administration and management acting within provisions of the PNG Education Act?
  • Is Aiyura board of governors empowered under the the Education Act to set such high disciplinary fees?
  • Is there a set limit on disciplinary fees imposed the boards of national high schools?

We parents of affected students are not happy at imposition of such hefty fees when we are preparing to pay fees for the tertiary education of our children.
I call on parents of affected students to contact me on 71244449 to address this issue.
