THE people of Kokoda in Sohe, Northern, have donated K52,500 towards the victims of the bushfires in Australia.
Sohe MP Henry Amuli revealed the total amount at the Kokoda station last Friday.
The Sohe administration gave K50,000 to add on to the K2,500 raised by the people.
Amuli said Australia had been closely linked to Kokoda sinceWorld War II.
“Kokoda is the focal point of much of Australia’s attention over the years, and we owe the economic and infrastructure development we have here to Australia,” he said.
Amuli said the people of Kokoda and Sohe were sad to hear of the plight of their friends in Australia.
“It is so sad for the people of Kokoda and Sohe to have learned that our friends in Australia were affected by this natural disaster,” he said.
“That’s why we make this donation to them as a token of our sympathy.
“The amount we are donating today does not necessarily represent how much we feel towards our friends in Australia, but our heartfelt sympathy towards them and our prayers for them, to find relief are much deeper than this mere currency.”
The donation was paid to the PNG Red Cross Society bank account.
