THE Kokopo district in East New Britain (ENB) has started the process of capacity building for ward governance.
District administrator John Talele said the authority board wanted to empower communities, especially the ward development committees, to be effective.
He said most wards did not have proper community hall building where they could carry out effective governance and one of the initiatives by the board was to help build them.
“Recently the authority board approved K300,000 and we raised three cheques paid to Togoro, Tavui Two and Korai wards in the Bitapaka local level government,” he said.
Talele said the funding was from the Kokopo district services improvement programme.
“Apart from the ward governance, we are focusing on building good facilities like community halls for the wards to function effectively.”
He said the intention was to help in activities that were related to effectively running the wards.
The authority allocated K5,000 each to the wards this year.
