THE Bulolo development authority (DDA) in Morobe is embarking on a major upgrading and resealing of roads in the district, according to local MP Sam Basil.
The upgrading includes work on the Bulolo-Wau road, Wau town roads, Zenag station road upgrade and others in Bulolo town, as well the sealing of 5km of road in the Buang local level government.
This is one of the major projects the DDA has embarked on this year which complements a Government initiative to improve the road networks in provinces to support the rural economy and service delivery.
For the Buang road, from Gabensis village into Buang LLG, the 5km road sealing comes under the district works programme with K5 million in funding from the DDA.
Basil, who is also National Planning Minister, said this road would be completed by the end of the year, with an additional 1km stretch of road to be prepared for sealing when funds were available.
“Under this Government, we are doing the same to all districts in the country by connecting roads,” he said. “And we are trying to make sure that funds are used for sealing instead of just maintenance.”
Basil said the sealing of roads in Wau town had started, with Bulolo town to follow.
He added that Water PNG had also funded K12 million for water supply for Bulolo town.
Basil said at Garaina station, a power project worth K2.5 million was underway to supply a tea factory.
He said road construction machines were now in Wau to upgrade the road leading into Garaina station.
Basil said the road upgrades in Wau town and Zenag station would be officially launched next week; the Wau roads will cost K1.6 million while Zenag station roads will cost K3 million.
He said the funding for these road upgrades would come from Bulolo DDA, Hidden Valley mine and Wafi-Golpu mining project royalties. Basil said a K1 million market facility would also be built at Zenag.
