District helps parents

THE support given to tertiary students by the North Waghi electorate in Jiwaka through school fees payments is a huge relief to many parents who are unemployed, a student says.
Jesse Gima, a student at the PNG University of Technology, said this year MP Dr Fabian Pok paid fees for all students from his electorate studying at universities and colleges, making it the eighth time he had subsidised their fees.
He said the help given to students lightened the burden on parents who still had to pay fees for children in other levels of education and other needs.
“Many students attending tertiary institutions come from poor families and they (parents) struggle to pay their fees,” Gima told The National.
“Some parents have more than two children in tertiary institutions and the help from the district was the right move to build human resource.”
Gima said in the past when two or more children from a family were selected into tertiary schools, one had to withdraw and let the other continue.
