THE Lae district development authority has committed K50,000 to assist Taraka Primary School to fund its infrastructure projects.
Authority chief executive officer Neil Ellery, representing Lae MP John Rosso, made the announcement during the school’s opening of a four-in-one classroom, canteen and board office on Monday.
“Education is the only way to freedom,” he said.
“Children should prioritise learning, as much as they can.
“Even though Lae is a big city, we still receive funds like any other districts in the country.
“The Lae administration has always been trying to distribute resources well as they can, and thus the funding commitment for the school.”
Ellery said youth development was crucial in order to see the development of the city.
“If we don’t have well educated and well equipped students that go into the workforce, then we won’t see our city flourish,” he said.
Ellery thanked the school management and staff for their efforts in building the classrooms despite limited funding and resources.
He also thanked the community for their support.
“Times are tough and resources are short, but educating our children must be our priority. It is a way to lift them out of any sort of poverty and bring them to prosperity.”
School board chairman James Serum said the school had major plans to rebuild its deteriorating infrastructure.
“Our students have sacrificed long enough to sit in cramped and crowded desks and rooms,” Serum said.
“With the opening of the classrooms, they can now reorganise their classes and will see more light in the learning process.”
