MOROBE’S Huon Gulf has renewed its tertiary scholarship scheme after seven years with its launching on Friday.
District education manager Sam Geseng said the scheme was stopped in 2016, but renewed it under the leadership of local MP Jason Peter.
There were about 450 scholarship application forms, of which, each of the local level government (Wampar urban and rural, along with Morobe and Salamaua) would have 100.
Fifty forms will be set aside for other cases.
“When distributing the application forms, we will enter the number into the computer data base to keep track,” Geseng said.
“The process and procedure is almost the same as the Gerson Solulu Scholarship (GSS) Scheme.”
The scholarship will come under the district education office and about K400,000 was allocated towards it for this year.
“We will sponsor them equally if they meet the requirements set,” he said.
“We will sponsor according to the resources we have, they will get 25 per cent across.”
Yowa Imaita, a third-year student studying human resources at the University of Papua New Guinea, on behalf of the students, acknowledged the district for the initiative taken to supporting the development of its’ human resources.
He emphasised that many students came from families who are struggling to meet tuition costs, and what the local MP and his administration had done was greatly appreciated by the students.
Meanwhile, district administrator Andrew Namuesh said that there would not be any duplication with the GSS.
He advised his officers to check thoroughly before accepting applicants.
“We have established committees, who will screen the applicants and we won’t allow nepotism and favouritism because we will select applicants based on the application’s guidelines,” he said.
The applicants would have to provide; acceptance letter for a year and transcript for year 2, 3 or 4, fully completed application form, government recognised institution, Grade 10 and 12 certificate, matriculation/upgrade results, GPA of 2.4 and above, NID, police clearance and medical report.
The application opened on last Friday and will close this Friday (Feb 9).
