PRIME Minister James Marape says tribal fights are not the way to resolve issues.
He was commenting on the chaos in Goroka following the killing of PNG Ports managing director Fego Kiniafa by rival tribesmen last week.
Marape condemned the killings saying the violence in Goroka should not have happened.
“Our nation has just celebrated 47 years of Independence and we cannot forever resort to tribalism to sort out our problems and disputes,” Marape said.
“Our people must not continue to resort to tribalism to resolve disputes as it only creates more problems.
“Let the police and courts sort this out.”
Marape said police were after those responsible for the murder of Kiniafa.
Marape admitted that police faced manpower shortage in the country which the Government would attend to as a matter of urgency.
“We will be recruiting more officers so that the police-to-citizen ratio is addressed,” he said.
“There will be a complete overhaul of the police system to be spearheaded by Internal Security Minister Peter Tsiamalili Jr.
“We will work in a holistic manner to have a better police system with better-trained and better -resourced police officers.”
He said the police would be working with the judiciary and prisons.
“I know our people have lost trust in police after having endured a broken-down system. But I can assure you all that will change.”
