THE Port Moresby Australian Football League (POMAFL) kicked off its 2023 season with Lamana Dockers edging Gereka Bombers 29-26 in round 1 clash at Colts Oval on Saturday.
The men’s A grade fixture saw Bombers lead 8-6 after the first quarter.
With the breeze behind them, Bombers had the opportunity establish a commanding lead in the opening 15 minutes but weren’t able to capitalise on scoring chances with a solitary goal and two behinds all they could muster.
The Dockers, who were also having problems of their own, managed to jag a six-pointer late to be just two points behind at quarter time.
Dockers had the benefit of the breeze in the second quarter and scored a goal and two behinds to lead 14-8 at halftime.
The wharf men extended their lead in the third quarter with a goal and a behind while the Bombers kicked a goal of their own.
With the Bombers trailing at 14-21 in the final quarter, the stage was set for a grand stand finish when they scored two quick goals to claw their way back in front to lead 26-21.
However, Dockers remained composed and retook control of the centerfield exchanges outmuscling and outsmarting their Gereka foes courtesy of a 50-metre goal which saw them snatch a 27-26 win.
Meanwhile, the Alavana Swans A grade team was presented new uniforms by sponsor Daltron.
POMAFL president Douglas Lai thanked information technology firm for supporting the team that is based out of Hula village in, Rigo, Central. Swans played 2022 grand finalists Gordon Kokofas in the earlier A grade fixture which saw them thrashed 7-88.
