TAMARAWS beat Togoba Kofi 53-51 in the City Rangers Basketball Association round four fixture last night at the Taurama Aquatic Centre indoor complex.
The Gabriel Elavo-captained side banked nine baskets in the opening quarter to Togoba’s equally impressive effort with the Buffaloes leading by a point.
Tamaraws started well but were slightly off pace owing to the fact that many of their roster had been involved in last weekend’s National Souths Basketball Tournament.
But despite the dawdling start, the two-time Port Moresby Basketball Association champions kept their wits about them on the court and held off a fast-finishing opponent.
“We were still in the recovery process after taking part in the NSBL tournament so started slow,” Elavo said.
“But a win is a win. We had the will to win the game despite the tiredness. The boys dug deep to fight back and claim the victory.
“We have won all our games after our first loss in round one. The team looks good at the moment in terms of our form. Tamaraws play in two competitions in the POM Basketball League and City Rangers League so the team is solid and competitive wise.
“We figured a few errors in our defence which we need to polish up. The offence is clinical we just need to be smart on the court.”
This is the first season for the back-to-back POMBA champions in the City Rangers competition and they have shown an ability to stay competitive in their second competition with three wins and a loss under their name so far.
Tamarraws were in sixth position while Kofi was in fifth spot heading into the match but after the result the Buffaloes and Kofi are expected to swap spots.
