PACIFIC View Apartments Dolphins went down to Island Mobile Hire Cars (IMHC) United 8-4 on day three of the Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup (CCIC) Central leg at Bava Park, Port Moresby yesterday.
The Dolphins despite fielding an inexperienced side took the fight to Pool C leaders United.
United opened the scores with a try to fullback Hobert Murip in the 20th minute off a fifth tackle kick by halfback Andy Tang. Murip missed the conversion for a 4-0 lead.
Dolphins hit back after United conceded a penalty 10m from their line. Dolphins halfback Frazer Anderson kicked the penalty for his side to trail 4-2.
The Dolphins turned up the heat up with several surging runs by props Mopes Andrew, and Robin Kaman while interchange forwards Junior John and McRoy Robert added impact.
United conceded another penalty in kickable range and Dolphins’ Alex John slotted their second goal to level the scores at 4-4.
United centre Martin Teni broke the deadlock with less than 10 minutes left after being set up by Tang. Dolphins coach Junior Paul said he did not expect his players to play the way did and commended them for their effort.
He said being successful in the Ipatas Cup was about taking the opportunities.
“I thought United was going to score more tries against us but we managed to defend well,” Paul said.
