MARY Help of Christian Parish (MHC) in Sabama and its surrounding communities received a helping hand from Don Bosco students, with a major clean-up last week.
Under the school’s annual community engagement Servanthood and Leadership Training (Salt)
programme, to go out and give service to the community living a life of service as servant leaders. The programme ran for three consecutive Saturdays – May 4, 11 and 18. On every occasion there was a formation and an evaluation at the end.
MHC Parish Priest Fr Ambrose Pereira commended the students and said the Salt programme is for young individuals to serve the community by being servant leaders leading by example in this community and their own communities.
A group of 43 students, with assistance from their patron, Michael Salin, and pastoral team member Leo Paraha, carried out projects in their church and the community.
According to Pereira, the students took to the church, cleaning chairs, cutting grass at the back of the church, cultivating flowerbeds, cleaning up drains and patching the road for the community.
He said as the students did their best to finish with a coordinated job, reaction from the community was positive, with some young boys in the community helping out in cleaning the drainage, removing bottles for sale and clearing out rubbish from the drain.
