STAFF on duty at the East Sepik Provincial Hospital in Wewak will no longer have to leave the hospital when they take a break, says a hospital official.
Chief executive Mathew Kaluvia said thanks to a donation by Wewak’s Chinese business community, doctors and staff now had their own space to take a break.
“Most times, it’s a challenge trying to bring them (staff) back to work (from home) because their homes are scattered across town,” he said.
“The hospital management would like to stop the practice of sending a vehicle with a note in search of on-call doctors at their residences.”
Kaluvia said transport and security were a concern and the hospital management was grateful for the help. “It would have taken a lot of time for us to be able to have everything in place and we are grateful to the chairman (Austin The) and the Chinese community for their support.”
Kaluvia said Summit Agriculture donated six rice cookers, the Chinese community donated six refrigerators, South Sea Tuna six TV screens and Chemica six jugs — all of which were valued at K25,000.
The Papindo Group of Companies also donated K160,000 worth of two containers where work was underway to prepare the doctors’ space at the hospital and where all the other household items and kitchen wares donated would be fitted to make it comfortable for the doctors to use.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, Tang Mow Ltd donated K10,000 which was used to buy hospital equipment.
