THE National Executive Council (NEC) has appointed Major Joshua Dorpar the acting director-general of the National Intelligence Organisation (NIO) for three months.
He was the acting director of the Defence Force Military Police.
He replaces Terence Frawley who was suspended by the NEC following the Jan 10 civil unrest.
Frawley, from Gamu village in Alotau, Milne Bay, served as an intelligence officer for the defence force and police for two years.
He was appointed for a five-year term on Oct 26, 2021 after leaving the constabulary as the director of the Intelligence Unit in 2019.
Opposition Leader Douglas Tomuriesa said the suspension of Frawley was questionable as he was not the only one reporting to Prime Minister James Marape as a member of the National Security Council (NSC).
“The NSC Committee consists of the chief secretary, head of police and head of PNGDF, Foreign Affairs and NIO,” he said.
“The blame is only on the NIO director-general for all the events of (Jan 10) and he was suspended,” he added.
“But was Marape informed prior to the incidents by the National Security Council?”
