THE heat in Port Moresby at the moment is unbearable and people should drink a lot of water to avoid thirst and dehydration, a doctor says.
Port Moresby General Hospital’s Dr Gary Nou posted on his Facebook page that the current weather in the capital city – up to 37C coupled with dry winds – was too much and dehydration among in people was expected.
“Please rehydrate well by drinking a lot of water to avoid dehydration,” he said.
Nou advised people to see the colour of their urine to tell whether they maybe dehydrated.
“Clear coloured urine means you are okay,” he said.
“If it was yellowish, you could be dehydrated. “If you feel tired, have headaches and body aches, have a look at your urine colour to ensure it is clear.
“To keep your urine clear, you need to drink more water.”
Nou warned people to avoid sugary drinks and soft drinks as they speeded up the dehydration process in the body.
“High sugar drinks like Coke will make you want to urinate more and you become more dehydrated.”
Nou advised fresh water from the tap as best for thirst.
He encouraged people to drink young coconut juice (kulau) to boost electrolytes in their bodies during the day.
