THE driver of a 15-seater bus that crashed into a police vehicle along Madang’s North Coast last Monday was arrested and charged but later released on bail.
Madang police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang said the driver and his crew were arrested and charged because they were drunk at the time of the accident.
He said the driver was badly injured and was taken to the hospital while several police officers suffered minor injuries.
“The duty police officers were on their normal patrol along the North Coast road and stopped at Pau market and were talking to a drunkard who was causing a nuisance at the market when the vehicle that was heading to Madang from Kubugam crossed over to the wrong lane and crashed into the police car.
“The bus was badly damaged and the passengers, driver and crew who sustained injuries were taken to the hospital.”
Supt Rubiang said the bus was returned to the owner and the driver and the crew would appear in court when their file is ready.
He said car accidents in Madang were becoming frequent due to drivers ignoring traffic rules.
