Drivers urged to observe rules

CHIMBU police are warning people not to drive while under the influence of alcohol and keep defective vehicles off the public road.
Provincial police commander Supt Jacob Singura said drink driving was the main cause of most fatal car accidents on the road and urged drivers to observe traffic rules and act responsibly.
“During this festive season, we do not want to have a fatal accident in the province when many people are travelling along the highway,” he said.
Singura said their Christmas and New Year operation started on Monday and police would be working 24 hours a day to ensure peace, order and public safety.
“My officers are patrolling the roads both day and night to keep the roads safe and make sure people get to where they going safely,” he said.
“My advice to drivers is not to drink and drive, you are risking your own lives as well as your passengers.”
Singura said those caught drink driving would face full force of the law.
“I also want to appeal to the drivers not to drive defective vehicles onto the public roads or you will be locked up.”
He said police would work to minimise the abuse of alcohol, home-brew and marijuana smoking.
Singura said under the amended Summary Offence Act 2018, the penalties for simple offence were severe.
“It’s better to stay away from trouble than to get into it.”
He said the province had not had any major law and order issues or accidents but his men would be vigilant throughout the Christmas and New Year period. He also called the people to celebrate Christmas positively with their families and friends.
