Police presence in LLG sees decrease in substance abuse

THE presence of police in a local level government in East Sepik has seen a decrease in the consumption of home-brew and marijuana, an official says.
Numbo LLG president Simon Niaha said the production and consumption of home-brew and marijuana which was rife earlier in the year has lessen, thanks to regular patrols by police officers from the Tangoro Police Station.
“From March and onwards, we’ve had some good policemen from Tangoro Police Station doing regular checks in the community and because of this, most of the production and consumption of home-brew and drugs had stopped,” Niaha said.
He said that in turn had seen less violence and crime in the LLG.
Niaha said despite facing logistics problems (vehicles and equipment) police were doing their best to maintain a presence in Numbo.
Niaha said the area had seen some positive change after being connected to the road network with the delivery of service such as policing.
“When services like roads link every village, it will also ease the burden of carrying out law and order work.
“The road access has also helped people transport their produces to the markets and made everyone’s life a bit easier.”
Niaha thanked Yangoru-Saussia MP Richard Maru who initiated the road construction.
