Drone initiative applauded

Letters

I ACKNOWLEDGE the Hela administration, under the leadership of Governor Philip Undialu, for taking the lead on how the country’s guns and weapons problems can be addressed.
I was impressed when reading the story published in The National on Oct 18 ‘Hela getting gun detector drone, aims to end violence’ and repeatedly said to myself, “What a break through”.
It indeed is a break through. We can come up with policies to address the many issues we have in relation to guns. But nothing seems to be working.
Lives are continuously lost at the barrel of a gun, properties destroyed, an atmosphere of fear created from situations caused by weapons used against others.
If this technology has been around in other countries, why has it not been considered some years back?
It would not be surprising to see the revelation of stock piles of guns and ammunition and of course other contraband once this drone is commissioned and in use.
With today’s technology, such devises can be hooked up to the surveillance system of the Police Department so that surprising visits can be given to people or places by our security forces.
I believe this is the way forward for gun free societies in our country.
I congratulate Undialu and the Hela administration for a well thought out plan for a province that has been making the headlines for the wrong reasons.
I believe that the governors and administrations of the other 21 provinces will be monitoring the progress of this project.
This is something that will have a greater impact on the lives of our people in a very positive way.
