AN escapee from Chimbu’s Barawagi Jail was shot and killed by police in Wau, Bulolo in Morobe, two weeks ago, a police officer says.
Morobe police commander Supt Jacob Singura said the escapee was drunk and tried to attack members of the community at Nami when police were called in.
“He was on the run and when police caught up with him, he tried to attack the police when he was shot,” Supt Singura said.
He appealed to the other escapees at large in Wau to surrender to police to ensure their safety.
He warned anyone in Wau harbouring escaped convicts to surrender them or they would be liable to prosecution.
Supt Singura said these escapees posed a threat to the communities they were in as most had been jailed for serious crimes such as murder, rape, armed robbery and assault and were likely to reoffend.
He said police in Wau-Bulolo were on high alert and would use force against any escapee who resisted arrest.
In confirming the shooting of the escapee, Wau police station commander Snr Insp Leo Kaikas said Wau police understood that there were more escapees hiding in settlements and communities in Wau.
“It is no use for you to hide.
“Surrender yourself to make life easier for your families and yourself.”
He appealed to youths in Wau to stop illegal activities and start doing something worthwhile to help themselves.
