Chimbu Governor Michael Bogai Dua’s aspirations to establish high schools in each local level government in his province is starting to become reality.
This follows the establishment of the new Suai High School, which is set to begin its academic enrolment next year.
This high school in remote Sinasina-Yongomugl will enrol 200 students and begin implementing the standard-based curriculum, fulfilling the Governments’ Education Plan 2018-2020.
Dua provided K500,000 for first-phase development of facilities including a science laboratory, home economics and practical skills classrooms, library and administration building, two houses for teachers and a four-in-one double classroom.
The funding also provided for operational accessories, including photocopiers, printers and computers purchased at Cybertronics Ltd, Lae.
Board chairman Fr Mathew Maima and principal Duale Waula accompanied Arrows Construction and Maintenance Ltd manager Philip Kamane and supervisor James Waula to procure the equipment on Wednesday.
Maima said there were eight feeder primary schools within Suai LLG but had never had a high school over the years.
“Instead, the students were sent to Moaina Secondary School, away from Suai and that was also a risk to our students and parents,” Maima said. “The communities are very happy with the new high school and applaud Dua.
“That will minimise travelling risks and also boost local cash flow when public servants (teachers) are posted to teach in LLG.”
Maima also commended local MP Kerenga Kua, who had pledged support for the second phase of development, and Education Minister and Gumine MP Nick Kuman.
