PORT Moresby men’s reigning softball premiers Brown Eagles clawed Stingerz 8-0 in round two of Port Moresby Softball Association men’s A grade competition at the Bisini Diamonds on Sunday.
The inform sluggers from Matupit were too strong for a brave Stingerz, who just did not have the fire power to match the Eagles.
The Eagles tight fielding and pitching laid the foundation for a convincing win with the most pleasing aspect that they shutdown Stingerz normally productive batting line up.
The kings of capital city softball might not want to get too far ahead of themselves as they may have caught Stingerz at the right time — early in the season before they have got a chance to build momentum and show some real sting.
The win has put the rest of the field on notice that the Eagles are still the threat they were last season having lost nothing over the offseason.
But the United Brothers, Bears, PNG Power and Yokomo will not be too flustered by the one-sided scoreline.
The Eagles swooped on the flat Stingerz through doubles from Tyron Panu and Peter Bunbun while Manu ToAlbert, Metty Levi, Kolish Pagal and Consie Lumaris ran in singles in clinical fashion with umpires Moses Tolinling and Tony Simatap calling off the contest at the bottom of the fourth partly because the Stingerz were showing no bite in the field, on the pitching mound much less with the bat, and because of time contraints.
Stingerz were scoreless with seven K2s recorded between Eagles pair Pagal and ToAlbert.
In the other results, Defence slapped the Kikila Cats 5-1, United Brothers grounded the Aviat Jets 12-4 and PNG Power edged the Bears 4-3.
