BOARD members of the East New Britain Market Authority were sworn in yesterday.

Provincial director of corporate affairs Ephreddie Jubilee said the authority was enacted in 2010.

The seven board members are acting provincial administrator Wilson Matava; Rabaul Urban LLG manager Freddy Lemekil Kokopo/Vunamami Urban LLG

manager Pennie Maroro; Chamber of Commerce representative Douglas Pidi; Women’s representative Bertha Kamit; NGO representative Ruth Tarere and Market traders representative Oscar Pitar.

The swearing-in ceremony was witnessed by provincial senior magistrate Samuel Lavutul.

It aims to regulate the rules, standards, safety regulations and management of declared provincial markets in the province.

She said the legislation was homegrown and came about after close consultation with the provincial government, districts and local level governments.

Jubilee said the law gave the board powers to generate revenue which was one way of growing the local economy.

The board reports to the provincial executive council as required under the act.

Matava told the board members to ensure that roles and powers enshrined in the act were adhered to.

“The market board has two big markets in Kokopo and Rabaul built by our partners – Kokopo built by the Gazelle Restoration Authority and Rabaul Page Market by AusAID.

“We will expand to Kerevat and other areas in

East New Britain,” Matava said.
