STUDENTS from East Sepik attending tertiary institutions will receive K2000 support from the provincial government.
Governor Allan Bird said the provincial government agreed to subsidise fees for the students.
Given the significant increase in fees at tertiary institutions, Bird said the policy would be implemented this year as soon as the policy was drafted.
He said K2 million would be made available in the provincial government’s budget for the school fee subsidy programme.
Bird said a criteria would be used when assisting tertiary students so that it was fair to all.
“We are sorting out the policy at the moment. The policy will cost K2 million – K1 million from PSIP and K1 million from internal revenue,” he said.
“As soon as policy is drafted by the end of this month, we will implement.” Bird said the provincial government would have a policy to assist with funeral costs of public servants in the province.
He said the main focus of the provincial budget this year was to grow the local economy.
