EAST Sepik Rugby Union plans to have more sevens competitions and tournaments in the province over the next two years, an official says.
President Emmanuel ToMarum said the provincial union was hoping to have rugby played throughout all six districts by 2022.
ToMarum said this following the conclusion of the Sports Tok Sevens tournament in Port Moresby on Sunday where East Sepik rugby was presented a trophy from Sports Tok to be used as a grand final cup for its provincial tournament.
“Rugby back in Wewak is getting along well and picking up interest from the six districts,” he said.
“We are currently basing our rugby at Wewak but our vision is that by 2022, the six districts of East Sepik will all be playing sevens rugby.
“To the Sepiks in Port Moresby and around the country, we need your support to help develop our rugby.
“This cup is up for grabs at our Greater Sepik Cup tournament and hopefully we will be able to host the tournament by January or February next year.
“I also welcome the clubs that participated this year for the Sports Tok Sevens to come to East Sepik,” ToMarum said.
PNG Rugby Union education and training coordinator Sailosi Druma said the cup donation to East Sepik showed that the sponsors valued developing the code in the province.
“Sports Tok has been doing tremendous work for rugby and the support they’re giving to East Sepik, we know the donation to East Sepik rugby will go a long way to spreading rugby in the province,” Druma said.
