EASTERN Highlands has hailed the government’s new electronic identification (e-ID) card system.

Acting provincial administrator Bill Kavanamur told a one-day workshop in Goroka yesterday that the new system would solve many problems currently faced by the national and provincial governments.

Similar workshops were held in Western Highlands and Jiwaka last week.

He said the provincial government would support the project and provide an office space at the provincial headquarters building.

The e-ID system was devised by the National Planning and Monitoring Department and is being implemented by the Office of the National Statistician.

The programmes involve a fix information collection office (ICO) which serves as individual information collection centre for a particular district or province.

The e-ID system is also linked to finger prints that can be used conveniently during census, electoral updates and other similar exercises.

It also aimed at collecting raw data for the entire province and district that the government can use for planning purposes.

E-ID project director Roko Koloma and Huawei Information Technology company officials are conducting the workshop for public servant in Eastern Highlands.
