Ecuadorian duo keen for resumption of league

LAE City say their Ecuadorian imports Abdias Antonio Aguirre and Gustine Icaza Vergara are looking forward to the resumption of the Kumul Petroleum National League (NSL) on Aug 1.
City coach Bob Morris said the duo had been in Lae during the coronavirus state of emergency (SOE) and were slowly getting back into training with the rest of the team.
“They’re both still here with us in Lae and they’re doing fine,” he said.
“I’ve been in contact with them but we’re just instructing the two of them to do only light work until we are able to get proper instructions to train in groups.
“I’ve also been reminding the other players in the team to also do light training and we all try to check up on each other to make sure that we’re keeping fit.”
Morris said the absence of football for more than two months was unexpected but warned his players to remain focused leading up to the restart.
“The Government has said that there will be changes to the way we do things, including sports, so we are just bearing in mind that our training may be affected,” he said.
Morris said he was looking at how the team was taking shape following the exit of several City players over the sacking of former coach Peter Gunemba.
