AN Eastern Highlands cooperative has earned about K800,000 from shipments of coffee beans to China.
Members of the Huwa Coffee Farmers Cooperative Society sent their first export in four containers to China late last year and this year.
The Huwa Coffee is from the Mt Michael local level government in Lufa district.
The group is one of the lead partners of the CIC-PACD, an agriculture development project mainly for coffee and cocoa funded by the World Bank.
The proceeds were distributed to farmers last week at the Lufa district headquarters.
Programme manager Potaisa Hombunaka congratulated the farmers for their hard work.
“This is a culmination of what started off as a group market in 2020,” Hombunaka said.
He said in 2020, the group generated K230,000 in group sales and K644,000 in 2021.
Hombunaka said the first and second sales were done locally while the third was exported through the Kofi Management Services Ltd.
“I am encouraged to see how they have progressed since 2020 as a small cooperative group,” he said.
The cooperative was formed in 2018 and registered on Sept 10, 2019.
