POLICE in Eastern Highlands have urged voters in the province to cooperate with authorities to ensure a peaceful polling period for the General Election 2022.
Eastern Highlands police commander Superintendent Michael Welly said people needed to behave responsibly and work with local police and the joint security task force (JSTF) deployed in the province during the opening of the metal container to do pre-counting of ballot papers.
Welly said the deployment of Defence Force soldiers, Correctional Service officers and additional police manpower for the election operation had given him confidence that they would be able to manage security during polling.
“I am calling on voters, supporters, candidates and the civil society to work with the security force, especially the JSTF and quick response force to deliver a peaceful, free and fair election,” he said.
“We will have additional manpower from the reservists, Madang, Lae Metro and Morobe commands to beef up JSTF for the polling and counting, we must work together to get nine elected representatives for the 11th Parliament.”
Welly said counting for the nine seats, including the regional seat would be at the national sports institute with closed circuit television cameras at all the counting centres.
