THE inaugural final of a Lower Mimanalo rugby league tournament kicks off on Sunday with Hegu Brothers facing Kamayufa Gamukes for a share of K24,000 at the Uritoka Rothmans Oval, Goroka.
Organiser and I Can Sports Trademark managing director Andrew Hama said the final would see the signing of a five-year deal for the tournament and the selection of two players for Port Moresby Vipers Academy.
“This will be an exciting day for the people of Lower Mimanalo in Goroka as they come to watch the final for the first time,” he said.
“Sponsors have been vocal about addressing rugby league violence and the successful completion of the final without violence will see match officials and club presidents sign a five-year sponsorship deal.
“This is to ensure that the tournament has full sponsorship every year with the number of clubs to be increased for the next five years.
“A total of K24,000 in cash prizes will be given away after the final with individual awards.
“The winners and runners-up will receive K7,000 and K5,000 respectively.
“The third-place finishers will receive K3,000 while K1,000 will be given to all participating teams as consolation prizes.
“During the presentation, the top-two players of the tournament will be selected to join Port Moresby Vipers Academy in Port Moresby.”
