ELA Motors are the champions of the Lae corporate bowls competition after holding out Lae Biscuit Company 10-7 in the grand final on Monday.
In the plate final, Trans Wonderland beat Tok Stret 15-11.
Ela Motors skipper Solomon Garoka said the 16-week competition was tough and despite losing some games, they still made it to the grandfinal.
“The grand final was a close game, but there could only be one winner. It was a 12-ends game,” Garoka said
“From the start, we all collected one apiece, with neither team collecting big scores.
“At the fifth end, we drew 4-4.
At the 11th end, we were nine and Lae Biscuit Comany was on seven points.
“We collected a point in the last end, putting our total at 10 to win.”
Corporate bowls competition sponsor and JBB Investments owner John Buri said the idea behind staging the competition — which began in 2012 — on Monday nights was that most people were free at the beginning of the week.
‘’It’s been seven years sponsoring the competition.
“The first two years, I did myself.
“The next two years, I had Coca-Cola come in as the co-sponsor.
“After that, Trans Wonderland came in as co-sponsors.”
Buri said the competition had attracted a lot of bowlers from corporate houses in Lae.
Trans Wonderland’s Simon Pariakua said: “It’s more of a social competition to introduce non-bowlers to the game.”
