A WARD councillor in Morobe is concerned about the accuracy of the electoral roll.

Sirari Ariba, of Sowara Ward 12 on the Morobe Patrol Post coastline, claimed that the electoral roll had not been updated since the 2007 elections.

Ariba said the roll did not reflect the actual eligible voter population in the ward.

He said about 30 voters would miss out because they were not registered.

“Many of them are young people who have reached the eligibility age since 2007 but are not on the roll,” Ariba claimed.

“The Electoral Commission sent out teams to our area and I helped them to register our eligible voter population but the electoral roll was not updated.

“I don’t know what happened to the data they collected and took back to Port Moresby.”

John Porei, the executive officer of former health minister Sasa Zibe, said: “This problem will affect the LLG elections throughout the country.

“There has been a lot of complaints about the electoral roll after the 2007 national elections but nothing has been done about it and now we are about to go to the polls again.”
